Benefits

Benefits for your Pup: Crickets are a 100% natural superfood.  They are packed full of essential nutrients, amino acids, and minerals that help improve eyesight, mobility, musculature, skin structure and coat, whilst supporting gut health.  A diet including crickets supports the overall health and wellbeing of your dog.

Benefits for the Planet: By choosing sustainable insect protein sources, you are helping to reduce the carbon pawprints that our pets’ diets have on the environment. The Cricket Hop Co. supplies us with crickets that eat discarded organic cassava leaves, require minimal water resources, and whose waste is returned back to the cassava farmers to nourish their fields—a complete, sustainable circle. Our ethically and sustainably farmed crickets are one of the most sustainable protein sources known to humankind—and pup.

  • Crickets are a clean protein. Crickets do not contain antibiotics, pesticides, GMOs, or heavy metals. They are raised in chemical-free environments with free-range access to food and water.

  • Acheta Domesticus (House cricket) is classified as a novel protein and considered by many vets to be hypoallergenic. This means that they are far less likely to cause a reaction and are suitable for dogs who suffer from allergies or have sensitivities to conventional protein sources such as beef, lamb, chicken and dairy. However, they cannot be fully accepted as hypoallergenic as some dogs with a shellfish allergy may have a reaction to crickets, as the exoskeletons have similar genetic makeup as some crustaceans.

  • The ethical welfare of our crickets is also of paramount importance to us. Though all insects have a nervous system that consists of dendrites and ganglia, the jury is still out among the scientific community if or how an insect can feel pain. Even so, scientists conclude that insects do not feel pain the way that humans do.

When we harvest our crickets, we place them into a chilling unit to make them dormant, then we blast them with dry ice before the drying process begins. This ensures that there is no stress or pain is involved and is the most humane process possible.

  • Dogs — even picky eaters — love crickets for their nutty, earthy flavour. Crickets contain the “healthy fats” (unsaturated fat & Omega 3 & 6,) which stimulate the taste and flavour of the finished product. The exoskeleton’s consistency stimulates chewing and adds a unique texture to your pup’s regular diet.

  • Our chews are designed to stimulate dental and gum health without causing dental odour. Feedback from manufacturers indicates that cricket-based pet foods have not recorded bad smells within the mouth in comparison to other types of meat-based products. This may be due to the bacterial composition of the protein, as crickets have a natural enzyme and fat which do not cause rotting through toxic bacteria.
